Selecting a Simulation or Assessment
HSI offers simulations that are appropriate for courses at all levels. Below are
our recommendations for various types of courses and applications.
Cooperative Learning (middle, junior high, and senior high schools):
The Desert Survival Situation and the
Subarctic Survival Situation remain our most popular products for
student teams in public and private schools. Cascades
Survival has become almost as popular, and can be completed in less
time.
Orientation and Team-Building Programs (undergraduate and graduate):
The Subarctic Survival Situation,
Cascades Survival, and Desert Survival
are widely used in college orientation programs and for team-building in
programs and courses designed around group projects.
Bushfire and Reef Survival are
also appropriate and may require the application of more advanced
problem-solving skills on the part of students.
The Group Styles Inventory (GSI) should be
used in conjunction with a simulation for courses involving intensive and/or
semester-long team projects. One inventory is needed for each student along
with one participant guide for each team.
Management and Leadership Courses:
Self-assessment exercises have become increasingly important for management
courses, and two of HSI’s inventories – the
Life Styles Inventory (LSI) and The AMA
DISC Survey (DISC) – are particularly appropriate for in-class
use. Both inventories are self-administered and self-scoring and are
accompanied by Self-Development (LSI) or
Debriefing Guides (DISC). These inventories
also are available on-line. These inventories enable prospective managers and
leaders to learn about themselves, understand their strengths and weaknesses,
and initiate self-development programs.
Organizational Behavior:
The Organizational Culture Inventory (OCI) is
used in many OB courses to introduce students to culture, enable them to see
how culture is measured by leading organizations, and to apply the concept to
their own organizations. Students can complete the inventory, describing their
own organizations, score the results, analyze the profiles, and (as an option)
prepare brief reports or term papers.
