Our History

Founded by clinical psychologist Dr. J. Clayton Lafferty in 1971 and directed by CEO and organizational culture expert Dr. Robert A. Cooke, Human Synergistics International (HSI) is a pioneer in the field of measurement for organizational and individual development. Dr. Lafferty’s original breakthrough “Circumplex” model, a circular graph for organizing and profiling twelve thinking styles, fueled the development and long-term success of one of the first 360º feedback tools, the Life Styles Inventory™ (LSI).

Our History

Soon after its conception, many major Canadian organizations realized the value of using Human Synergistics to initiate positive change. By 1982, Canadian demand for HSI products was so great, that it became prudent to open an affiliate office.  Thirty years later with offices in St. Marys, Ontario and Montreal Quebec, Human Synergistics Canada continues to help individuals, teams and, organizations develop and grow.



Today, Human Synergistics International is lead by organizational culture expert Dr. Robert A. Cooke. After refining and validating the LSI Circumplex, Dr. Cooke became one of the first organizational theorists to propose that people exhibit particular thinking and behavioural styles, either functional or dysfunctional, due to something “bigger” than their personalities or even what is rewarded by their organizations.

That something “bigger” led to the creation of what is now the world’s most widely-used and researched culture survey—the Organizational Culture Inventory® (OCI®). The availability of this scientifically valid yet practical tool for measuring culture has contributed to a multitude of academic and business publications showing the importance of Constructive Cultures to enhancing the engagement of members, the effectiveness of work groups, and the sustainability of organizations.

Over the past 40 years, HSI has extended its reach and impact by launching international affiliates and offices across the globe and increasing its offerings to meet client needs. HSI retains its research orientation and maintains a strong focus on offering the highest-quality business solutions including world-class diagnostic inventories, teambuilding simulations, workshops for consultants and coaches, and optional consulting services to support the implementation of its systems and materials.
